By Owen Russell

This past Saturday, Oct. 15, the men’s cross country team trekked out to Long Island to compete in the St. Joseph’s–Long Island invitational. The team placed 17th out of 18 teams, finishing 23 points above Old Westbury.

The Bulldogs’ top finisher was junior Azizjon Sharifov with a time of 33:33 for 8K. Coming behind Sharifov was sophomore Kevin McCarthy, finishing 99th overall with a time of 39:22. Unfortunately, Brooklyn placed behind CUNYAC rivals, Hunter (3rd), Baruch (4th), CCNY (6th), Queens (11th), John Jay (12th), College of Staten Island (13th), and Lehman (15th).

The Bulldogs have one meet left until the CUNYAC championship. They tow the line next on Oct. 21 in Long Island once more for the Adelphi Short Course Showdown.

The women’s cross country also suited up for the St. Joseph’s Invitational on Oct. 15. Like their male counterparts, they too finished second-to-last, placing one spot above CUNYAC rival Lehman College.

Sophomore Fatima Aftab crossed the line first for the Bulldogs, placing 84th overall at 31:11. Freshman Loris Tsang came second for Brooklyn placing 96th overall. Unlike the men’s team, the women were able to beat at least one conference rival by placing 45 points above Lehman. However, CUNYAC competitors, Queens (5th), CCNY (6th), Hunter (7th), John Jay (8th), and Baruch (12th), all bested the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will race on Friday, Oct. 21, at Adelphi’s Short Course Showdown. It will be their last meet until the CUNYAC championship on Oct. 30.

Men’s Tennis Returns For One Match

By Owen Russell

Welcome back men’s tennis! The men’s tennis team played a special fall match on Oct. 15 against the Pratt Institute. Though the tennis team usually plays in the spring, fall may be their new favorite season after cruising to a 7-2 victory over the Cannoneers.

Ryan Sham was lights out for the Bulldogs. In doubles competition, he and Aymen Kuc muscled out a tough 8-7 win. Then, in singles competition, Sham swept his #1 singles match, winning his two sets 6-4 and 6-2. Brooklyn’s win can be attributed to stellar doubles play. The team was firing on all cylinders, sweeping all three doubles matches.

The Bulldogs will go back into hibernation until the spring, playing their next contest on Mar. 9.

Women’s Tennis Wins Two Games, Loses to Pratt

By Owen Russell

The women’s tennis team had a strong week winning two of their three contests. They now sit 3-8 for the season.

The Bulldogs secured their second conference win of the season after beating the Bloodhounds from John Jay on Tuesday, Oct. 11. In the battle of the canines, Brooklyn got off to a shaky start by dropping all three of their doubles matches. Despite the setback, the Bulldogs rallied and won five of their six singles matches, giving them the nudge. Junior Veronika Tsiko won the singles #2 contests battling back from a first set loss. The win helps build Brooklyn’s confidence heading into the postseason.

After beating the Bloodhounds, Brooklyn built upon their momentum by beating Albertus Magnus College on Oct. 14. The Bulldogs’ win came on the backs of their doubles teams this time around. Doubles #1 team Monica Prado Capon and Veronika Tsiko took care of business, winning 8-6; while Marah Mustafa and Allison Dubrow easily handled their Doubles #3 match, winning 8-1. The Bulldogs encountered some singles trouble, but were able to escape with enough wins to push the team over the edge.

Having secured two straight wins, the Bulldogs were hoping to make it three on Oct. 15 against the Pratt Institute. It was not the outcome Brooklyn hoped for. The Bulldogs suffered a tough loss, scoring only one victory, losing 8-1. The Bulldogs’ sole win came from #2 Doubles team Saoirse Ebert and Rebecca Finney. The duo secured an 8-5 win, but it was not nearly enough for Brooklyn to win their third straight.
Despite the blowout loss on Saturday, Oct. 15, Brooklyn still secured two much needed victories. They now prepare for the CUNYAC Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs will play next Oct. 23 in the opening round of the postseason.

Women’s Soccer Drops Momentum

By Owen Russell

After finally earning their first win last week, Brooklyn was unable to capitalize on their momentum, suffering two shutouts in their subsequent two games.

Brooklyn’s first loss of the week came on Oct. 12 against the CCNY Beavers, who blasted the Bulldogs right out of the gates, scoring two quick strikes in the first five minutes. Brooklyn could not stop CCNY in the second half either. The Beavers added three more scores to bring their final total to five. Brooklyn couldn’t find the back of the net on their two shots. The final score was 5-0.

The Bulldogs suffered a deflating case of deja vu, losing their next game 5-0 against the John Jay Bloodhounds. The Bulldogs allowed four goals in the first half, and there was no catching up from there. Brooklyn shot just once and was unable to score. The Bloodhounds tacked on one more goal, adding insult to injury in the 71st minute.

With the two losses, Brooklyn falls to 1-12 for the year. The Bulldogs have one more chance to improve their record before the postseason. They host Lehman College on Oct. 22.

Men’s Soccer Earns First Win Of Season

By Avi Wizwer

The Bulldogs covered the gamut this past week. In three games, they won, lost, and tied another.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the men’s soccer team was in control for most of the first half, scoring a late goal to put them ahead against CCNY. Jordi Hernandez gave the Bulldogs their first half lead, scoring in the 43rd minute. The second half was too much for the Bulldogs as CCNY scored two straight in the second half to put them over the edge. Brooklyn moves to 0-11-1 overall, and 0-4 in CUNYAC play, while CCNY improves to 2-4-1 and 2-1 in CUNYAC play.

As the Bulldogs were looking for some momentum to finish off the season, they eventually found it. They pulled off a late game-winner to put them ahead of York on Oct. 12, and found their first win of the season and first win in conference play. First year midfielder Yasin Elsammak scored the clutch goal in the 89th minute, giving Brooklyn the advantage. Goalkeeper Jason Martinez finished with three saves, helping Brooklyn lock up York. Brooklyn College improves to 1-11-1 and 1-4 in CUNYAC play, while York falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.

On senior night for the Bulldogs, Brooklyn College played a back-and-forth match that led to a 3-3 draw in conference play against John Jay on Saturday, Oct.15. Jordi Hernandez scored his second goal of the week, helping the Bulldogs secure the tie. Brooklyn College was able to come away with a tie moving them to 1-11-2 and 1-4-1 in CUNYAC play, while the Bloodhounds went to 3-9-1 and 3-3-1 in conference play.

Prior to the match, Brooklyn College seniors, Luis Garcia and Muyinjo Turabov were acknowledged by head coach Luis Flores.

The Bulldogs will get ready for their final regular season game against Medgar Evers next Saturday, Oct. 22, the match will be played at Kingsborough Community College.

Women’s Volleyball Racks Up CUNYAC Wins

By Gabriela Flores

The reigning CUNYAC champions are not looking to drop their title anytime soon. In their match against Lehman on Saturday, Oct. 8, the Bulldogs took out the Lightning 3-0. During the first two sets, Brooklyn took the lead while Lehman trailed behind. Though their competitors picked up steam with a 3-0 start in the third set, the Bulldogs took back their momentum, ending the final set 25-14 in their favor. The match saw Brooklyn score 27 kills against Lehman’s nine, with outside hitter, Aleah Rafat, landing a match-high of nine kills. Senior defensive specialist, Alanis Guinada, also took the reins of the game in digs with a match-high of nine.

Brooklyn didn’t show mercy to host Baruch later that day. Though the Bearcats put up more of a fight, the Bulldogs made three clean sweeps. Keeping it close in the first and second sets, Brooklyn and Baruch ended both rounds 25-20 with the Bulldogs in the lead. Once the third set came, it was lights out for the Bearcats as the match closed with a 25-12 score for the Bulldogs.

The next day, however, the Bulldogs’ winning streak was shut down by Alvernia University in non-conference play. The Golden Wolves played offensively on Sunday, Oct. 9, with the Bulldogs tailing behind. Alvernia’s Rachel Sipling led in kills for the match with 18. BC’s Zoey Van Vleet led in match-high digs and service aces. Last Sunday’s match-up led to Alvernia sweeping Brooklyn in a 3-0 win.

Later that day, the Bulldogs didn’t rally successfully against their host Rutgers-Camden. After four sets, the Scarlet Raiders took a 3-1 win. Though things looked bright in the third set for the Bulldogs, who managed a 25-20 victory, the fourth and final set showed that Rutgers-Camden had other plans. Van Vleet showed out again with a team-high 18 digs.

Once they returned to CUNYAC play, the Bulldogs got back to sweeping their competitors. In their match against Medgar Evers on Thursday, Oct. 12, Brooklyn won 3-0 against Medgar. The Bulldogs landed 23 total kills, with Medgar having only two. Sophomore outside hitter Tessa Winkleman landed a match-high of 13 kills. Defensive specialist Guinada returned with a team-high six digs. Securing their win against Medgar, the Bulldogs move to 4-1 in conference wins.

Their next CUNYAC matchup is set for Tuesday, Oct. 18, against John Jay.
