The Stuck in the Library club at Brooklyn College held an in-person Halloween party last Thursday, Oct. 13. The bash was loaded with snacks and activities, signaling an encouraging step toward normalcy on campus.

“My motivation behind hosting the event was that I love Halloween, it’s my favorite holiday, and I also thought it would be a good idea to introduce more people to STL that way, give out merch, talk about the upcoming magazine,” said Skyla Medina, BC senior and president of Stuck in the Library. “I felt like it was a good way to do that especially coming back from COVID, a lot of people probably don’t know what this [STL] even is.”

With around fifty students in attendance, the outcome seemed to be a success with everyone enjoying the fun.

Party-goers entered a raffle to win an original STL poetry or literary publication or a hoodie with the club’s logo embroidered on it. Shortly after, there was a costume contest showcasing attire ranging from angels to devils, and even a hotdog. Though, nobody could stand in the way of a student who came dressed as a wind-up doll, who later walked away with the first-place prize.

The carefree night allowed students a chance to relax in the midst of midterm season when many were in need of a break. At the end of the party, attendees got cozy and started watching Halloween episodes of old Disney and Nickelodeon shows, a nostalgic event for many.

“I thought that’d be a great idea since a lot of us grew up watching these episodes every October and they’re pretty lighthearted,” Medina said, regarding the thought process when it came to screening the classic episodes.

While organizing the event, those in the club focused on emitting the perfect Halloween atmosphere. The State Lounge, or the fifth floor of the Student Center, was filled with countless details that reinforced the spooky vibe. There were skeletons donning the entrance, skulls littered throughout the room, and more spooky decor. Guests ate the decorative, Halloween-themed cupcakes and drank a few beverages disguised as blood bags.

While a festive event, this wasn’t a usual day for STL. The club is an outlet for students interested in literature to pour out their passions.

“We all in the club have a passion for writing, storytelling and art in general so it’s nice to have students know they have a place they can go and share ideas with other students,” Jolie Gutierrez, a member of the STL events committee, told the Vanguard.

This party isn’t where it ends for the Stuck in the Library club, though. They will continue their normal activities of publishing poems and literary works from students, but they will also focus on planning more events for the future.

STL’s next hit event will be their upcoming poetry edition release in November, for which they’re accepting entries until Oct. 25.
