The Brooklyn College Women’s softball team made their CUNYAC debut on April 2, against John Jay in a doubleheader. BC came into this series riding a six-game win streak, but ultimately lost both games.
BC had been hitting well prior to this series, as they had scored four or more runs in each game during their win streak. The Bulldogs could not extend their win streak in their CUNYAC debut, and they dropped the first game to a score of 10-0. BC would only manage one hit this game, which only lasted five innings.
John Jay would start the game off with two runs and would score two runs again in the second inning as well. They managed 11 hits and one error in the first game. BC senior and infielder Zoey Van Vleet would be the only player with a hit in game one, as she hit a double during the second inning.
The second game was more of the same, and John Jay would take the second game 9-1. John Jay scored two runs at the start of the game and wouldn’t score again till the third inning, where they scored two more runs, extending their lead to 4-0.
BC would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore and catcher Vida Rodriguez would notch a hit and score teammate Paige Alaia-Palacios. While this is not the debut they wanted, the team would hope to recoup and play better against their next opponents, Rutgers-Newark on April 6.
Yet another double header for the Bulldogs, and this time they would go up against Rutgers Newark on Sunday, April 6.
Senior pitcher Danielle Guzzardi started game one and threw six solid innings while only giving up two runs, although only one was earned. BC committed three errors this game, which resulted in a run scoring, but Guzzardi still pitched a gem.
Junior shortstop Melanie Millan would crank a two-out base hit in the bottom of the first inning, but she was left stranded. This was a close game and was 0-0 until Rutgers got two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. BC would look to respond in the top of the sixth with back to back hits from Palacios and junior outfielder Molly Martin.
They would be thrown out trying to reach scoring position, and their rally would end. Rutgers would put up two more runs by capitalizing on the Bulldogs’ errors and extending their 4-0 lead. Rodriguez would end her day going 2-3 with a hit and double, Alaia-Palacios had a hit this game, Milan had a hit, and Martin ended her day with a hit as well.
Game 2 of the Rutgers doubleheader, saw the Bulldogs lose 8-0 as Rutgers put up two runs to start the game off. Martin pitched this game and pitched all five innings of the loss. They would have 12 hits this game and sweep the doubleheader. Rutgers scored in each inning of this game.
Rodriguez had one hit and a walk, Milan ended her day with a hit, Van Vleet had a hit, and freshman Ashley Konner had a hit in her start today.
BC hopes to bounce back on Wednesday, April 9, as they look to start a win streak against St. Joseph’s University at home, in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m..
