It’s safe to say that the men’s soccer team is operating on a different level this year. They’re dominant at home, and up until now, they have also been undefeated when playing at home. This week’s recaps will cover their great play and more, but up first is women’s soccer.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team had been in a bit of a rut before this game. Underdogs in their last eight games, this was one of the team’s worst stretches in recent years, but they were playing in their first conference match of the season, looking to dust off the losses.
BC did just that, beating York College 4-0, and got back on track with their winning ways. The scoring popped off in the first quarter at the 20-minute mark, as sophomore midfielder Julissa Chino scored a goal with help from teammate, sophomore midfielder Zasu Alvarez.
BC would score three goals in the second quarter, adding on to their lead. First, sophomore forward Gianna DiPronio would get the party started by scoring a goal, 25 seconds into the second quarter, with an assist from sophomore Audrey Jane Young.
The standout player of this game was junior Shakhzoda Isomidinova, who scored two goals in the quarter. She finished her night with seven shots, four SOGs (Shots On Goal), and two goals. Her teammate Chelse Gonzalez helped with two crucial assists.
BC will continue its conference play and will be on the road to face off against John Jay on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Women’s Volleyball
On Oct. 7, Baruch College faced off against BC in its third conference play of the season. Both teams had won their last two conference games before this one, but Baruch would come out victorious in this game.
In a game that would go into overtime, BC would only win the third set. The sets were as follows: [31-29, 25-17, 21-25,25-21]. BC managed to make each set close but came up short in the end. This game had great performances from their players, including freshman Saule Okeke-Ziburkus, who had 13 kills and two blocks.
Other key contributors were freshman Ella Snobar, who had 10 kills, senior Ayatallah Elkotby, who had five kills and one block, and junior Olivia Fan, who had five kills and three blocks. Also, junior Malia Reyes had 15 assists this game. BC was not on its A-game on Oct. 9 against the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights, as they dropped this game 3-0. BC lost all three sets via scores of 25-11, 25-20, 25-21. NJ would halt BC’s dominant offense, as many of the players could not muster many kills.
Snobar had three kills and one block, Okeke-Ziburkus had two kills and one ace, Elkotby had three blocks and one kill, and Fan ended her night with one kill and two blocks. The team hopes to bounce back on Tuesday, Oct. 14, against CCNY at 6:30 p.m.
Mens Soccer
Going into their third conference game of the season, the men’s soccer team has been lights out at home, currently undefeated in home games. They were facing a familiar foe in John Jay, an opponent whom they faced off against in last year’s CUNYAC quarterfinals. They would get their victory this time around as BC would come back and win this game 2-1.
John Jay would score first, but BC would respond with a goal from sophomore Emir Imamberdiev at the 20-minute mark. The game would remain tied until the second quarter, as the Vanguard’s Player of the Month, freshman Andrew Gavriol, would come up big with a goal to help take the lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Wilson Munoz would help maintain the lead with crucial blocks in the later minutes of the game.
For the first time in Vanguard Sports Recaps’ history, the men’s soccer team had two players score a hat trick in one game. In the first quarter of their match against Medgar Evers College on Oct. 11, teammates Nikala Metreveli and Gavrilov both scored three goals and helped secure the win in a score of 6-0.
Metreveli was named as the CUNY Player of the Month for September, and this game shows why he was deserving of that honor.
Gavrilov would open the game with a goal at the eight-minute mark. This historic game would keep the men’s winning streak going in the CUNYAC, and they hope to extend it during their next match against CCNY on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
