Men’s Cross Country Improves On 5K Course

By Owen Russell

The men’s cross country team ran their last meet of the regular season Friday, Oct. 21.

Rather than their usual distance (10K), the Bulldogs competed in the Adelphi Short Course Showdown, running a five kilometer race for the first time this season. The short course provided interesting results. Brooklyn’s top finisher, Azizjon Sharifov, placed 90th out of 156 finishers. Sharifov ran 18:55, placing nearly two minutes ahead of Brooklyn’s second finisher Kevin McCarthy.

The short course seemingly worked wonders for the Bulldogs. Brooklyn may have placed 16th out of 19 teams, but succeeded by beating two CUNYAC rivals. Brooklyn finished one spot ahead of York, and two ahead of Lehman. CCNY (9th), Queens (12th), and Staten Island (14th), all finished ahead of the Bulldogs.

Brooklyn generated some much-needed momentum heading into the CUNYAC championship meet. The Bulldogs will look to build upon their past performance and hopefully top a few more teams in their final meet of the season.

Behind the team’s strong finishes, Brooklyn was able to best Medgar Evers and York. Queens (9th), CCNY (11th), Hunter (12th), Lehman (15th), and Staten Island (16th) all finished ahead of the Bulldogs.

Brooklyn finishes their season on Oct. 30th at CUNYAC Championship meet. It will be their last race of 2022.

Women’s Volleyball Wins Two Games, Drops One

By Owen Russell

The women’s volleyball team improved their record to 14-12 this past week. They will hope to sustain their winning ways as the season races towards the playoffs.

Brooklyn’s first win of the week came on Oct. 18 against the John Jay Bloodhounds. Brooklyn battered the Bloodhounds in three straight sets, sweeping their CUNYAC canine rival. The Bulldogs put away their competition in part by their excellent serving. Brooklyn tallied 15 aces, more than double John Jay’s total. Sophomore outside hitter, Tessa Winkleman, led the Bulldogs in kills with 13. The win helped Brooklyn improve their CUNYAC rival to 5-1.

Brooklyn’s second match of the week saw them stumble. As part of the William Paterson Tri-Match, the Bulldogs squared off against William Paterson on Oct. 22. Brooklyn got out played by the host team, losing three straight sets on their way to their 12th loss of the season. Unlike their previous performance, Brooklyn couldn’t find any serving success. The Bulldogs only scored two aces, compared to William Paterson’s 11.

Despite the early defeat, Brooklyn rebounded later in the day, defeating SUNY Maritime in three straight sets. Live or die by the sweep. Brooklyn played a strong team game against the Privateers, tallying 36 assists and 37 kills on their way to the rout. Freshman outside hitter, Emma Steele, and Winkleman both led the team with eight kills each.

The volleyball team seems poised to make another run at the CUNYAC Championship this season. Before the playoffs begin, Brooklyn must play two more regular season contests. Their second to last match comes on Oct. 25 against CCNY.
