The beginning of June means a lot of things for New York City (NYC): Pride Month, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, and NYC’s biggest music festival, the Governor’s Ball (Gov Ball), which took place from June 5 to June 7. This festival returned to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for the fourth year in a row, featuring a plethora of major artists: Lorde, Jennie, Stray Kids, and A$AP Rocky.
This year’s festival saw several performers gracing the Gov Ball stage for the first time. R&B singer-songwriter Mariah the Scientist made her debut after “unforeseen circumstances” led to a cancelled set during Gov Ball 2025. KATSEYE took over Gov Ball’s main stage with an electrifying set, with an audience of young attendees chanting for the girl group, including Cardi B, her daughter Kulture, and friends.
BLACKPINK’s Jennie made her debut as a co-headliner on Sunday night, rocking a New York-influenced outfit from the brand AWGE, owned by fellow co-headliner A$AP Rocky. Jennie was later seen hanging out with Rihanna at Rocky’s set.
Speaking of Rocky, the Harlem native closed the weekend out with a riot, as his performance featured songs from across his catalogue, including his latest album, “Don’t Be Dumb,” and a cameo from Tokischa to perform their song, “Flackito Jodye.” This weekend also saw Rocky as the cover for VIBE Magazine’s limited edition Summer 2026 issue. This issue marks VIBE’s return to print since 2014, as the company will produce quarterly issues with limited print copies, only 1,000 for this first issue.
Though the sun shone down on Corona Park, heavy rainstorms threatened to halt the Gov Ball experience. Saturday saw severe rainstorms that shifted scheduling, including cancelling indie artist Blood Orange, rock band Amyl and the Sniffers, and headliner Kali Uchis’ set, and pushing up Stray Kids to an earlier time, so attendees could leave before the incoming rainy weather.
While the skies cleared for Sunday, a brief rainstorm halted several sets. Rising electronic-pop singer Slayyyter had her Gov Ball debut set delayed for over 20 minutes due to inclement weather. The stage flashed a teal screen stating, “Storms in the area,” and then a red screen stating, “Lightning in the area. For safety, the show has been temporarily paused.” Despite this, fans waited through the rain and experienced Slayyyter’s top songs from her newest album “WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA,” including “DANCE…” and “CRANK” live.
Aside from the musical festivities, Gov Ball attendees were given a variety of brand activations to visit throughout the park, including Dunkin’ Donuts, DoorDash, ElectroLit, Tinder, and Red Bull. There were also several drink options for 21+ attendees, with activations from Patron, Hennessy, Malibu, BeatBox, and low-dose THC beverages from Ayrloom. The festival also partnered with several organizations, such as Elmhurst Corona Resource Collaborative (ECRC), Headcount, which helps concert goers get registered to vote, and This Must Be the Place, a company dedicated to delivering Naloxone to prevent fentanyl overdose at music festivals.
Music unites the masses, and Gov Ball provided fans the opportunity to experience their favorite artists live in the city that never sleeps, or crumbles when the rain comes down. From career-amplifying sets to stages that reminded us why these artists are headliners, Gov Ball is NYC’s Coachella, and attendees lived every day of the festival like they were waiting for the green light.
