Imagine you’re in the middle of your work shift and you receive an email about the termination of your position. This was the reality for many Spirit Airlines workers across the nation as the airline terminated its services on May 2.

A statement from Spirit was released the same day, without prior communication to their workers and travelers.

“[Spirit] regretfully announced that the Company has started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately. All Spirit flights have been canceled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport,” stated Spirit.

Spirit was famously known for allowing budget-friendly travel to many Americans.

In the statement, Spirit mentioned the increase in oil prices, as well as other resources, led to the decision to shut down its engines.

“The recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook. With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down,” stated Spirit.

The airline’s decline led the company to file for bankruptcy twice in 2024. Spirit sought $500 million in funding from the White House, but the deal never grew to fruition, leading to the airline’s shutdown.

But for many travelers, the closure posed a bigger concern for the state of the economy. Cities like Pittsburgh have lost one of their only commercial airlines.

“The only commercial airline to fly out of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe has ceased operations after two bankruptcies and mounting financial challenges,” according to Pittsburgh Magazine

After the statement was released, flights were cancelled immediately, leaving airport workers scrambling to find a solution for travelers already at the airport.

“No Spirit flights were in the air as the shutdown took effect, but the closure has had an immediate impact on those who were set to travel, as well as those mid-trip with return flights booked,” according to NBC.

Along with flight cancellations, travelers are left with non-refundable travel expenses as a result of the abrupt company closure.

“Passengers will not be reimbursed for costs incurred as a result of the flight cancellations, such as emergency hotels, unless otherwise covered by their travel insurance plans,” reported NBC.

But the travelers aren’t the only ones getting stuck with this abrupt message, as pilots and flight attendants had to adjust quickly to the unexpected unemployment status. One pilot even expressed his devastation through the plane’s intercom after receiving the news mid-flight.

In a TikTok video posted by a passenger of the flight, the distraught pilot stated, “We got a notice from our union right, that we are going to be ceasing our operations at 3 a.m.[…] We’ve been in the air since 1983. What is that, 43 years? And unfortunately, that’s over. So thank you for your support over the years.”

Spirit Airlines attempted to provide a sense of comfort in other ways, such as reimbursements for direct flight costs.

“The airline said it will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through it with a credit or debit card, but passengers who did not book directly will need to request a refund via their travel agent,” stated NBC.

But some people have looked at the closure as a new business opportunity. Frequent Spirit flyer, Hunter Peterson, took to TikTok to propose starting a community fund to buy the company.

“His initial pitch was to run the airline like the Green Bay Packers, the only publicly owned team in the NFL. It has more than 5 million shares split among more than 530,000 owners,” stated NBC.

Though many people questioned the ability to run a successful campaign, the crowd raised sufficient funds.

“A TikTok campaign to buy and revive Spirit Airlines has secured more than $132 million in pledges, just days after the budget carrier suspended operations,” reported The Independent.

As the airline has ceased its operations, it has closed the door on an affordable airline option for passengers, opening new questions about what the future of airline costs can look like for prospective travelers.
