Men’s Soccer Stays Scoreless, Loses First Two Matches

Men’s soccer kicked off its season on Sep. 2 against William Patterson as part of the Kean University Tony Ochrimenko Classic. The Bulldogs had a tough start to the season last year, dropping their first seven contests, and were hoping to get off on the right foot Friday. In a rematch from last year, the Bulldogs were held scoreless by the Pioneers. The first period ended close, with Brooklyn only allowing one goal. Even as the second period got under way, Brooklyn held William-Patterson to just one goal through sixty minutes. But as the game wound down, the Pioneers picked up the pace and scored four goals in 22 minutes. The Bulldogs managed merely four shots against the staunch defense, and couldn’t capitalize on any of them. The final score was William-Patterson 5, Brooklyn 0.

Hoping to rebound from the season opener, Brooklyn suited up against Kean University on Saturday, Sept. 3. It was another scoreless effort from the Bulldogs. Brooklyn fired zero shots in the first period, while allowing Kean to kick at will. The Cougars shot 16 times in the first period, capitalizing five times in the first 40 minutes. The second period wasn’t much of an improvement for the Bulldogs. They allowed two more goals, and were held scoreless yet again. The final score was Kean University 7, Brooklyn 0.

The Bulldogs return to Brooklyn on Wednesday, Sept. 7 for their home opener against the Pratt Institute. They will be searching for their first goal of 2022.

Women’s Soccer Loses Opening Game

The women’s soccer team was supposed to open its season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Sarah Lawrence College, but due to a postponement, the Bulldogs’ season opened on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Rutgers-Newark. After losing 13 games last season, and only winning one, the Bulldogs came into Saturday hoping for a fresh start; though Rutgers had other ideas. The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 lead by halftime. In the second period, Brooklyn scored its first goal of the season. Senior midfielder Rachel Gomez scored the Bulldogs’ one and only goal. By the end, Brooklyn  had allowed nine goals on 37 shots. The final score was Rutgers-Newark 9, Brooklyn 1.

The Bulldogs will host St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn on Wednesday, Sept. 7. It’ll be Brooklyn’s first home game of 2022.

Women’s Volleyball Bounces Back After Losing Opening Match

The reigning CUNYAC champions opened their season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Sarah Lawrence tri-match.

Their first game of the day came against Sarah Lawrence College. The day didn’t start as planned for the Bulldogs. In their matchup against the Gryphons, Brooklyn lost 3-1. The two teams were evenly matched statistically, but Brooklyn got edged out. The Bulldogs dropped the first two sets before winning the third. The fourth set was close with the two teams trading leads back-and-forth, but in the end Sarah Lawrence closed out the game winning the fourth set 25-21. First year Bulldog Tessa Winkleman led the team with 15 kills.

Despite the loss, Brooklyn bounced back for a dominant performance against Medgar Evers later in the day. The Bulldogs swept the Cougars, and it was never close. They won each set by double digits, winning 25-8, 25-6, and 25-13 respectively. The Bulldogs scored an impressive 23 aces and 26 kills against the CUNYAC rival. Freshman setter Amra Mulic tallied 12 aces, helping Brooklyn wipeout Medgar Evers.

Riding high off an impressive victory, Brooklyn will look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday, Sept. 6 when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
