Men’s Soccer Suffers Setback

By Billy Wood

Brooklyn College’s men’s soccer team is hoping to get back to its winning ways after a 2-0 loss to Hunter College this past Saturday afternoon at the BC Athletic Field.

Two first-half goals were able to win it for Hunter College as Sammy Ahmed and Blaise Enama landed on the scoresheet in the first and 21st minute, despite being outshot by the Bulldogs 18-2.

This game comes off the Bulldogs getting their first win of the season 2-1 against Lehman College last Wednesday. The team was hoping to keep the momentum going but unfortunately suffered a setback.

They will be looking to get back to winning ways against Baruch College on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Randall’s Island and improve their 1-8 record this season. The Bulldogs have an overall record of 2-10-4 against Baruch College.

The game kicks-off at 5 p.m., and you can watch the live stream at the Brooklyn College Athletics Men’s Soccer page.

Women’s Soccer Remains Winless

By Billy Wood

Brooklyn College’s women’s soccer team lost to Old Westbury 3-2 at the BC Athletic Field on Monday afternoon. This is coming off a 1-5 loss to Purchase College over the weekend. This loss brings their overall record to 0-9, scoring only five goals and conceding 52 goals in the process.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the 12th minute with a goal from Priscilla Vixama. Old Westbury was able to equalize in the 32nd minute due to a goal shot by Mia Almonte.

A goal from Rachel Gomez was able to restore the Bulldogs’ lead in the 66th minute. However, Westbury were able to bounce back with two unanswered goals from Nicole Abalco and Melanie Escobar in the 77th and 88th minute, respectively.

This game is the first time that the Bulldogs have scored more than one goal in a game. Their next game is on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Randall’s Island against the City College Of New York. They are coming in with a 3-5 record.

The Bulldogs will be hoping to break a three-game losing streak against City College dating back to October 2017. Prior to that the Bulldogs were on a nine-game win streak, scoring 24 goals and conceding just one goal from September 2013 to November 2016.

The game is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball Wins One of Three

By Owen Russell

This past week, the volleyball team won one of their three games, bringing their record to an even 7-7.

On Sept. 28, the Bulldogs hosted the Cannoneers from Pratt Institute. The game was a back-and-forth contest, which saw Brooklyn and Pratt trading wins up until the final set. The Cannoneers were victorious in the end, winning the final set 15-13.

The Bulldogs next played on Oct. 2 when they traveled to Wilkes Barre, PA to compete in the King’s College tri-match. Their first match of the day was against the Penn College Wildcats. This game was all Brooklyn. A three-set sweep where the Bulldogs won by double-digit points each set. The Bulldogs scored 37 kills, while the Wildcats could only manage 8.

The second game of the day pitted the Bulldogs against the hosting King’s College Lions. Brooklyn won the first and fourth set, forcing a fifth set, but much like the match against Pratt, the Bulldogs lost 2 sets to 3. It was a hard-fought contest, and the Lions’ strong defensive performance proved too formidable for the Bulldogs.

Despite the losing record this week, there is still cause for celebration. For the second straight week, sophomore Ashley Fung was named the CUNYAC player of the week. The Bulldogs have now gone four straight weeks with a player being named Player of the Week.

The Bulldogs will get their first taste of CUNYAC action in their next contest on Oct. 9, as they travel to the Bronx to face Baruch and Lehman in a tri-match.

Cross Country’s Shane Kimball Continues To Shine

By Owen Russell

Shane Kimball continues to have a dominant start to the season as he won his third straight CUNYAC Runner of the Week. Competing at the NJIT Highlander Invitational, Kimball placed 35th out of 237 runners. His time of 27 minutes and 17 seconds was Brooklyn’s fastest finish, which helped the team place 19th out of 29 teams. Seton Hall won the race, but the important takeaway for the Bulldogs is that they finished ahead of CUNYAC Rivals York College and City College. The two CUNYAC teams ahead of the Bulldogs, College of Staten Island and Queens College, finished 15th and 18th respectively.

As for the women, the Highlander Invitational did not go as well. The team finished second to last, placing ahead of only Centenary College. Senior Malak Abuhashish was the team’s top finisher for the third straight meet. She ran a time of 22 minutes and 42 seconds, finishing 103rd out of 235 runners.

Both the men and women will race next at the Golden Eagle Invitational in Farmingdale, NY on Oct. 10.

Women’s Tennis Earns First Win

By Elijah Hamilton

The Brooklyn College women’s tennis team is coming off a week where they split their two games 1-1. In last Wednesday’s road match against CUNYAC rival Hunter College, Brooklyn College’s women’s tennis team lost 8-1.

Hunter took an early 3-0 lead after doubles. They then went on to win the first five matches in singles action.

Brooklyn’s only win came in the singles competition with junior Isabel Bruschi picking up a win after trailing in the first set of three matches.

Brooklyn earned their first win of the season on Monday, Oct. 4 against St. Joseph’s College. Brooklyn shined in singles action, picking up big wins behind the strong play of Rebecca Finney and Marah Mustafa, who each pulled out 8-7 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. In addition, senior Kamilla Shulanova rolled to an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 singles.

With these games in the book, the Brooklyn College women’s tennis team stands with a record of 1-6, while they are 0-2 in divisional play. As of writing, they are preparing to take on York College on Oct. 5, as their first of three CUNYAC matches remaining before the Conference Championships.
